The very first Transport Affordability Index that is created by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) presents the households that are in Sydney to have the highest cost of transportation throughout the rest of Australia, both in the two perspectives of dollar worth and the percentage of the income in every household.
A household that has two vehicles is said to have a transport expense of $419 weekly in Sydney, compared to that of the households in Brisbane and Melbourne that spends $376 and $348 respectively. However, in Canberra, it only requires one to spend at least $299 for maintaining a car, making it the cheapest place to have a vehicle throughout the country.
In the meantime, the cities that have a very low cost to have and own a car is in Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, and Hobart, where one only can spend $300, $286, $285, and $275 respectively. A normal household has a couple and children, and this is the basis for the hypothetical household that the survey focuses on.
The household is composed of a 38-year-old husband and 36-year-old wife, which is also the average age of the men and women, and that they own two cars and are employed. The average mileage of a passenger car is 13,800 kilometers per year and is used for 9.8 years.
It also estimates that the household each have two vehicles that will have a mileage of 15,000 and 10,000 kilometers yearly.
It is stipulated that the household is located in the middle and outer ring suburbs, having a great population density, have convenient access to public transportation, and would need to have access to other forms of transportation, to make it more convenient and practical.
This shows that owning a car is not just about the buying, but also about the maintenance and operating costs that need to be seen.
