White was named the most popular car color of the year this week for the third year in a row.

One in four new-car owners chose white this year, which is an increase of 3 percent, according to data released by PPG Industries, the largest supplier of transportation coatings.

Silver and black finished tied for second at 18 percent each, followed by gray, red, natural hues, blue and green.

White finished first in North America, Europe, and Asia, according to PPG Industries. Silver was first in South America this past year.

"We see growth in the variety of whites being offered to consumers," said Jane Harrington, PPG manager of color styling, according to the Associated Press.

Gold and beige were the most popular colors for minivans in North America.

There is a "growing appetite" for red and blue however in the U.S., especially when it comes to sport vehicles, according to the Associated Press.

"Car manufacturers are seeking ways to create variations of white, silver, black and gray that are specific to their brands and that complement different vehicle types," said Harrington in a statement.

Over 60 new colors will be introduced for the 2016 and 2017 model years.
