A mother who volunteered to chaperone a dance at a Pennsylvania high school allegedly assaulted a student at the homecoming event.

When the 43-year-old woman decided too much rap music was being played at Springdale Junior-Senior High School's annual dance, she grew angry and went after the student she thought was responsible, authorities told WXPI.

A student at the school told the outlet the situation escalated when the woman went after the student who hired the disc jockey. The girl ran "into the bathroom to get away from the situation. The woman followed then grabbed the student by the arm," according to court documents.

After hearing from adult and teenage eye witnesses, Springdale Township police said they determined there was enough probable cause to file simple assault charges, WXPI reported.

Simple assault in this instance would likely be defined as "an attempt to cause or intentionally, knowingly or recklessly cause bodily injury to another" or "an attempt by physical menace to put another in fear of imminent serious bodily injury."

The altercation, which led to a criminal complaint, was "one of the most disturbing things ever witnessed at a school event," students told WXPI.

"Officials take this situation very seriously. We will wait for the outcome of the investigation and respond in the best interest of student safety," a representative from the Allegheny Valley School District said in a statement. "In the meantime, the district continues to review practices for parent-sponsored and school-sponsored events."

School officials did not contact the authorities concerning the incident, according to WXPI. The suspect's family declined to comment to the outlet.
