Microsoft finally confirmed that an Xbox One VR headset is coming. The tech giant says that the device will bring mixed reality technology to the console and the upcoming Project Scorpio console next year.
A year ago, the Redmond software giant announced its plans to launch a VR headset that's capable of mix reality with the Windows 10 Creators Update. At this week's GDC, the project has been renamed Windows Mixed Reality.
Microsoft's Alex Kipman said in a blog post; "We're also excited to share that Windows Mixed Reality experiences will light up on other devices over time, beyond the desktop and Microsoft HoloLens. Our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018."
On the other hand, Project Scorpio is the codename for the upcoming Xbox One model, that's capable of true 4K gaming, high-end virtual reality, and HDR content. Microsoft is catching up to rival Sony in the VR category. The Japanese firm's VR headset has already sold a million units since they rolled out in mid-October.
Also during the Game Developers Conference, Microsoft launched Acer's mixed reality headset. A few reports say that early versions of the headset are rolling out to developers soon. Microsoft also announced that in January, early versions of the Xbox One VR headsets would be shipped to developers in March.
Back to the Acer headset, it will feature two liquid crystal displays with a resolution 1440 x 1440 displays, a 60 HZ refresh rate. It also has a built-in audio out and microphone, a single cable with HDMI 2.0, and USB 3.0 for data connectivity.
For the meantime, this headset needs to be connected to a PC running Windows 10 to work. The Xbox One VR are expected to be publicly available later this year, and once Creators update will start this spring. But it is still unknown if the devices will be available on day one.
