Toyota 2017 Lineup: New 8-Speed, 10-Speed Powertrains In The Works

Toyota, a carmaker huge on engine development, will introduce a wide variety of new powertrain components starting in 2017 all the way through 2021. The automaker is introducing a new 2.5-liter inline four-engine together with the all-new 8-speed and 10-speed transmissions, as well as more powerful hybrid systems.

The powertrain pertains to the components of automobiles that generate power and deliver it to the road surface. According to MSN, Toyota is now creating engines with improved thermal efficiency. A new 2.5 liter direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine, targeted to align with the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, has a thermal efficiency of 40 percent in gasoline vehicles and 41 percent in hybrid vehicles. This reduces energy losses and allows a high output.

Here is the proof that Toyota has been investing heavily to shift its new powertrain lineup: by 2021, Toyota will introduce 17 versions of nine engines, 10 versions of six different hybrids and 10 options of four transmissions, as well as multi-geared automatics and a new kind of CVT. By that time, 60 percent or even more of Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold annually in the U.S., Japan, Europe and China are projected to include the new powertrain bits. The new powertrain components in these models will warrant the CO2 reduction of 15 percent, Toyota projects.

According to The Truth About Cars, Dynamic Force is the name of Toyota's next-generation gasoline powertrain, aka powerplants. While the metric displacement has not changed, the new mill adopts direct injection and a host of friction-reducing measures to reach the thermal efficiency rating of 40 percent. That, together with high-speed combustion technology and a variable control system, should be able to boost power by 10 percent. No horsepower figures have been announced just yet.

The powertrain pieces will start appearing on a new-model vehicle in 2017, according to Toyota. Starting next year, Toyota shall also increase its hybrid technical development staff by around 30 percent until the end of 2021.
