Free Zip Car: Carsharing Company To Offer 7,000 Free Rides On Election Day

Last-minute voters on Election Day have no reason to fret about making it to their polling places on time, as Zipcar is offering its members free transportation from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time on Nov. 8. 7,000 Zipcars will be dispatched across the country for the initiative, part of the car sharing company's DriveTheVote campaign.

To further promote the program, Zipcar has fast-tracked its member approval process that once took days to complete. Prospective voters who want to avail of the service can now become members in mere minutes, simply through Zipcar's mobile app, reported Digital TrendsSince Thursday, members can already begin reserving a free Zipcar for the specified time period. Membership costs $35 per year.

The cutoff for voting in most states is at 8 p.m., after which everyone already in line can still cast their ballot. The initiative is thus ideal for voters working late shifts, although the company will not be monitoring whether the free rides are actually used for the purpose of last-minute bids to reach the polls.

Zipcar did, however, stress on their website that members should exercise consideration, taking into account that a ride used for a different purpose would be taking a free trip away from someone who really needed the transportation to vote.

It also told members not to fret if they saw the full price of the trip when booking a Zipcar on the app. As long as the ride is taken between 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, it will be $0.00 upon checkout.

Other ride-sharing companies have also sought to use the platform to increase voter turnout, like Uber enabling a service that would auto-find a customer's polling place on Nov. 8. For more information on Zipcar's offer, the company has launched an FAQ on its website about the election initiative.
