Amazon to Open Two Stores in California For The Holidays

Amazon will open a pair of new temporary retail stores in San Francisco and Sacramento this holiday season to push sales of its hardware.

Amazon's new San Francisco "pop-up kiosk," set to be located downtown at Market Street and Fifth Street, was first reported by GeekWire. The location should open on Oct. 22.

The Sacramento location will also be open for the holiday season. The online retailer confirmed the locations will be intended to push its own tablets, along with its smartphone and set-top streaming box.

"We're excited to open new pop-up kiosks in San Francisco and Sacramento in time for the holidays so that customers can try out our new devices," the company said in a release. "The team is moving incredibly quickly - already this year we've launched Fire TV, Fire phone, new Fire tablets, new Kindle e-readers, and a bunch of new features and services.

"While customers can already see our products online and at retailers like Best Buy and Staples, we wanted to provide another option to try out our full line-up leading into the holidays," Amazon added.

The news of the temporary locations comes on the heels of the news that Amazon will open its first store permanent store in Manhattan, New York.

The Manhattan spot will offer more than Amazon's own hardware, as the company looks to offer same-day delivery of certain resold product to New Yorkers.

Amazon's NY location will be located at 7 West 34th St., inside a 12-story building adjacent to the Empire State Building. The spot will have inventory and serve as a mini-warehose for the company.

Customers will be able to exchange and return products, or pick up an order they placed online.

The 12-story building on 34th Street is owned by Vornado Realty Trust, and once housed an Ohrbach's department store. It now has Mango and Express stores at street level.
