Belgian chemicals company Solvay SA has won a contract to provide plastic for Apple's new iPhone 6 smartphone devices.
Solvay will provide polyether ether ketone polymer (PEEK) a colorless thermoplastic polymer, for internal parts of the iPhone 6 models, Bloomberg reported on Monday.
The report cites "people with knowledge of the situation."
Neither Apple nor Solvay have commented publicly yet regarding the news.
Apple's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus became available in September. The company logged a record 4 million pre-orders the first day.
The new iPhone devices sold more than 10 million units their opening weekend, a new record, despite not being available in China.
The two devices went up for preorder in China on Oct. 10. One million orders were received by the country's three wireless carriers in the first six hours of availability.
Preliminary numbers were released from China's biggest telecoms: China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom
The contract is a boost for Solvay Chief Executive Officer Jean-Pierre Clamadieu's strategy, which is to focus on higher-margin consumer offerings amid a plan to exit cheaper polyvinyl chloride plastics through a joint venture, according to Bloomberg.
The company now joins Britain's Victrex PLC, the market leader by volume, in benefiting from an increased demand for PEEK plastics in consumer electronics as companies want products to become thinner and lighter and are increasingly at risk of overheating because they process more data.
Evonik Industries AG is another major company that specializes in plastic.
PEEK, which is used in a number of industries like medical, aerospace and automotive, is well-known for its strength and rigidity and has a reputation for being able to withstand high temperatures.
Solvay shares were unchanged at 110.05 euros as of 9:08 a.m. in Brussels, according to Bloomberg.
