Volvo's redesigned 2015 Volvo XC90 SUV will be offered in plug-in hybrid and T6 gas engine versions.

The plug-in hybrid version of the all-wheel-drive XC90 will carry the badge "T8" and comes with a combined output of approximately 400 horsepower, according to a company release.

"There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90," said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group, according to the release. "In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions. But with the all new XC90 you can have both." The new XC90 offers a range of Drive-E engine options, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel efficiency. The main distinguishing feature of the Drive-E engine range is that they are all four-cylinder engines.

The automaker has been taking its time unveiling its new vehicle.

Volvo unveiled the interior of the seven-passenger SUV back in May. The vehicle will formally be introduced at the 2014 Paris Auto Show.

"Normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode," said the automaker. "This utilizes a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine, which powers the front wheels and an 80hp (60 kW) electric motor driving the rear wheels."

The plug-in hybrid's drivetrain "Twin Engine" technology setup includes a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an 80 hp electric motor.

A driver will have the option of switching to pure electric power simply by pushing a button.

Volvo said its XC90 plug-in hybrid has a range of approximately 25 miles in electric mode.

"With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world beating fuel economy," said Mertens. "With seven people in the new XC90, carbon dioxide emissions per person and kilometre are outstandingly low."

Volvo's new vehicle is expected to compete with vehicles like the 2014-'15 Acura MDX and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, among others.

The new Volvo's biggest competition will be the 2015 Tesla Model X however, a highly-anticipated vehicle expected to be released by Tesla Motors *blank.

Volvo will announce pricing and launch timing in the U.S. later on this year.

The XC90 is expected to arrive at U.S. dealerships next spring.
