Apple is supposedly talking about increasing the price of its flagship iPhone by over $100, according to CNet.com.
Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a note this week that carriers have "pushed back" at the proposed increase, but the iPhone maker may get its way since no other major phone releases are expected for 2014.
"Our checks indicate Apple has started negotiating with carriers on a $100 iPhone 6 price increase. The initial response has been no, but there seems to be an admission that there is no other game-changing device this year," said Misek, according to the tech website.
The next iPhone device, expected to be called the iPhone 6, will likely be released sometime this fall.
Many analyst feel that a price increase would only help Apple rivals, like Samsung, who offer cheaper smartphone devices.
"The possibility may at first seem farfetched in light of investor concerns regarding possible carrier subsidy and handset price cuts due to smartphone saturation and lack of differentiation," Misek said. "But we think this general lack of differentiation could be the reason why Apple may be able to get a price increase. Carriers realize that the iPhone 6 will likely be the only headline-worthy high-end phone launched this year and that they will lose [subscribers] if they do not offer it."
Misek's note claims the extra cost will be split between the carrier and the customer, as each will be asked to pay $50.
The iPhone 5S is sold currently for $200 with a two-year contract. If the increase were to take place, customers would likely have to spend $250 for the iPhone 6, at least.
Apple is considering this move despite the fact that the company's internal research showed that people want cheaper phones with bigger screens, according to CNET.com.
Apple is expected to make the iPhone 6 available with two display sizes: 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. Reuters reported earlier this month that production for the smaller of the two devices would begin in May.
The next iPhone is expected to come with a number of new features, including a thinner, bezel-free design, processor and camera upgrades, and a more durable, sapphire screen.
Apple has not commented publicly regarding rumors of a price increase, specs, or a release date yet.
