Sony has declared its new PlayStation 4 the bestselling video game console this month, reportedly selling twice as many as Microsoft's Xbox One.

According to the monthly report from NPD Group, PlayStation 4 saw the most sales, but the group didn't specify numbers, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"PS4 led overall hardware sales this month, followed by the Xbox One," said NPD, which mostly focused on total market growth in the report.

Playstation announced that the device was "the #1 selling game console in the US in January, still #1 worldwide," GameSpot reported.

In a statement to reporters including WSJ, Sony said PlayStation 4 sales were about double those of "the nearest next gen competitor" and that the new console has been the top seller since it debuted in November.

"It's clear gamers are choosing PlayStation as the best place to play," Guy Longworth, Sony's senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing, said in the statement provided to WSJ. "Although PS4 remains severely constrained at retail, we are working hard to refresh supply as quickly as possible."

While PlayStation 4 may have had the best console sales, Microsoft said its Xbox One devices are encouraging shoppers to buy new games.

According to NPD numbers, the Xbox One "sold the most games across all console platforms in January with 2.27 million units sold, making up 47 percent of software market share," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing strategy and business for Xbox, as quoted by WSJ.

The upcoming "Titanfall" game, which is available only for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC, should boost game sales and possibly console purchases.

Industrywide, hardware sales were up about 47 percent year-over-year, according to NPD.
