Emilia Clarke has been cast in the iconic role of Sarah Connor for Paramount's "Terminator" reboot.
Known for her turn as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's "Game of Thrones," Clarke won the role in a field that reportedly included Brie Larson and Margot Robbie, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Larson recently starred in "Short Term 12," an indie drama that was a film festival favorite, while Robbie is in the upcoming Martin Scorsese movie "The Wolf of Wall Street."
The news of Clarke's casting was first reported by Deadline. Arnold Schwarzenegger will also return to the screen "in his signature cyborg role," the outlet said.
Alan Taylor, who directed "Thor: The Dark World" and is a co-executive producer on "Game of Thrones," will direct the reboot.
Paramount, Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures are teaming up for the project, which is already slated for a July 1, 2015 release. Laeta Kalogridis ("Shutter Island") and Patrick Lussier ("Drive Angry") will co-write the screenplay.
Annapurna Pictures reportedly purchased the rights for more than $20 million and plans to make at least two "Terminator" films, according to EW.
The important role of John Connor, Sarah's son, hasn't been firmly cast yet, but Jason Clarke ("Zero Dark Thirty") is in negotiations for the part.
"The role of Sarah Connor holds a firm place in pop culture history," EW noted. The part was originally played by Linda Hamilton in James Cameron's "The Terminator" and "The Terminator 2: Judgment Day." The character was also portrayed in FOX's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which ran for two seasons and starred Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke's "Game of Thrones" co-star.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the new "Terminator" film will be the fifth in the franchise but the first in a planned stand-alone trilogy.
