Nissan and Infiniti Tease EV Models Ahead of 2025 Release; Company Invests $500 Million in the U.S. Plant

Nissan made a huge announcement on Thursday, February 17, with the Japanese automaker revealing that it will build two new EV models at its Canton, Mississippi plant in the United States starting in 2025. One of those models will be for the Nissan brand, while the other one is for its luxury vehicle division Infiniti.

However, Nissan delivered quite a surprise with its announcement as the automaker opted to build passenger cars for their new electric models instead of crossovers. Teaser videos for the Nissan and Infiniti electric vehicles show the new models having low-slung silhouettes. That feature suggests the upcoming models will either be four-door hatchbacks or sedans.

Nissan showed just an obscured front 3/4 shot for its vehicle's teaser video. The electric model takes its cues from the Nissan Ariya, based on its headlight design and smooth nose.

Infiniti's upcoming EV is a sedan

Infiniti did not reveal much in its vehicle's teaser image, but a video teaser confirmed that its next release would indeed be a sedan. Many were expecting Infiniti to roll out an SUV for its electric model, given its tremendous popularity across the globe, particularly in the United States. The future car of Infiniti has the brand's trademark curvy look, with waterfall lighting slats placed across the front of the vehicle.

Both electric vehicles are likely to share powertrains and underpinnings, with Infiniti's model likely to provide customers with a more upscale interior and distinct styling. Auto website Car and Driver theorized that the soon-to-be-released Nissan might look like the IMS concept car it unveiled in 2019, while the upcoming Infiniti EV could take inspiration, no pun intended, from the QS Inspiration concept vehicle.

Nissan's Canton plant gets massive $500 million investment

Production for both of these electric models won't start until 2025, so interested customers will need to be patient to see how these vehicles look. Based on the vehicles' target release date, the Nissan and Infiniti cars may be unveiled either in the latter stages of 2023 or 2024 at the latest.

These two vehicles are part of Nissan's plans to build 23 electrified models by 2030, 15 of which are fully electric. Nissan Motor is pouring in huge money for this endeavor, announcing on Thursday that it will invest $500 million to transform its assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, into a key production hub for EVs in the U.S.

Nissan started operating the Canton facility in Mississippi back in 2003. The auto giant currently assembles four models in the factory, including the Altima sedan, the Frontier pickup, and the Titan full-size pickup truck. As soon as the factory is upgraded and the employees' training for EV production is completed, the Canton plant will add the electric models of Nissan and Infiniti to its vehicle list.
