Excitement for the much-speculated Surface Phone has gradually increased since it was first rumored. However, there are speculations saying that it may never go into production.

Windows Phone demise could affect the Surface Phone. Speculations are saying that if Microsoft loses hope in the Windows Phone, the tech giant could drop the much-awaited smartphone altogether. A report on mobile operating system market shares shows disappointing figures for the Windows Phone.

According to a worldwide research, Windows Phone has slipped further behind the likes of iOS and Android. The same is the case for the Blackberry OS. Windows Phone accounts for only 0.3 percent of all smartphones sold worldwide in the last three months.

Windows Phone sales performance has been slowly declining and the report marks the latest period of decline in performance for the tech giant's current smartphone. iOS and Android combined already makes up for 99.6 percent of the last three month's sales across the globe. 0.3 percent belongs to Microsoft's Windows Phone with the remaining 0.1 percent to BlackBerry.

Fans were hoping that Microsoft would continue to further develop the Windows Phone. Unfortunately, the recently release figures seem to speak of public disinterest towards it. The other scenario could simply be that the public is very much excited but would rather wait for the smartphone rather than buy the current Windows Phone on the market.

Recent speculations are suggesting that the smartphone could finally get released this year after the tech giant releases the official build of the Windows 10 Creators Update. The Creators Update is expected to be released in April.

If the Surface Phone does get released, the company will most likely not have a difficult time with it given its high-performance specs and the track record of Surface tablets. Its speculated foldable display feature will no doubt earn the buy-in of many.
