A 16-year-old responsible for a fiery Los Angeles-area car crash that killed five teenage passengers last weekend didn't have a driver's license.
The incident took place on the southbound 5 Freeway between Sand Canyon Avenue and Alton Parkway at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Oct. 4, according to ABC7.com.
Bradley Morales, the only one to survive the crash, was driving everyone home from Knott's Berry Farm when the car hit a guard rail, dipped into an embankment and erupted in flames, California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokeswoman Denise Quesada said, according to Reuters.
Firefighters found a four-door, 1995 BMW sedan resting on top of a 20-foot cement barrier on the side of the freeway.
Morales remains in serious but stable condition at Mission Hospital after undergoing brain surgery. The passengers were later identified as Matthew Melo, Alex Sotelo, Brandon Moreno, Jenny Campos and Jenny Bahena.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. It could take as long as a month for the investigation to be completed.
There is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, J.J. Antillon, an assistant chief with the CHP said according to the Los Angeles Times.
"The most important thing is to gather the facts of what occurred that night. Whatever happens later on has yet to be determined. We're very early in the investigation and I think it's only fair that we conduct a fair, thorough investigation," said Antillon.
The crash also started a small brush fire that was quickly put out.
The CHP is still trying to figure out who gave the teen permission to drive the car. The vehicle was a family member's car, though the relative has not been identified yet.
Officials say that it's too early to decide if criminal charges will be filed in the case.
