Renovo Motors showcased a prototype of its new all-electric coupe on Friday at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California.
More than four years in the works, the Renovo Coupe goes from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.4 seconds and runs on a lithium-ion battery. The plug-in, which is the first completely electric supercar from the U.S., can receive a quick charge in half an hour and be fully charged in five hours.
"Renovo Motors sought to create an aspirational vehicle that demonstrates the performance, control and excitement that is possible with EV technology," Renovo CEO Christopher Heiser said in a statement. "We have poured our passion and innovation into the Coupe in an effort to deliver a truly amazing driving experience, and we're honored to present the Production Prototype of our car at the Concours d'Elegance."
The coupe, which was built at Renovo's Silicon Valley plant, employs two mid-mounted axial-flux motors that produce 500 horsepower at full throttle. Its CSX9000 chassis comes from the Shelby American brand but has been revisited by designer Peter Brock.
"This shape was nearly perfect 50 years ago, and physics doesn't change much over time," Brock, who has long been advising Renovo Motors, said in a statement. "However, the redesigned car has a totally updated body, frame, suspension, and cabin; it's a new chapter for this chassis. When the Renovo team approached me with the idea of incorporating my work into their designs, I was thrilled. The finished product definitely carries the spirit of the original car strongly into the future."
Renovo plans to put the coupe into limited production next year and will start pre-sales on Sunday at Concours d'Elegance.
"Simply put, we can do things with electric vehicles that can't be replicated by any other platform," said Jason Stinson, Renovo chief technology officer. "Exploring these areas, reducing them to practice and building them into our products is at the core of what we do best."
