Whisper App Now Lets You Hear Secrets around the World

Whisper, an anonymous social platform to share secrets, has updated its app to include customized categories and related content while keeping its users under the radar, Mashable reported.

The company, which recently brought in $36 million more in funding, has a valuation of $200 million and says it has more than 6 billion views a month.

Launched in 2012, Whisper has slowly grown and next wants to connect people within its user base who have common interests.

"Before, you would just encounter the full firehose of Whisper content, whereas now, we allow you to explore individual categories so that you don't necessarily have to look at everything at once," Neetzan Zimmerman, editor in chief of Whisper, said of the changes, as quoted by Mashable. "We think this will help with filtering out content you don't want to see."

With the update, which is now available on iOS, users will see suggested categories that can include Love and Romance, Family, Money and more.

"The idea is to sort of wall off each individual category so eventually we can build you a customized home feed," Zimmerman explained to Mashable.

Whisper has to maintain its users' incognito status while working to connect them with each other.

"You're basically creating these mini communities around different sentiments," Zimmerman said. "This is the way that we build communities through anonymity."

The other big change in the new update is found in the location feature, which previously only let users see Whisper posts that are nearby. Now, Whispers can be heard from around the globe.

"We've opened up the nearby feature for the entire world," Zimmerman told Mashable. "Instead of just seeing your backyard, you can see anyone's backyard in the world."

"You can go to Crimea and see what people are whispering at in Crimea," he added. "You're not limited to seeing what's happening in your own neighborhood."
