Apple Testing 4K Monitor Update with Doubled Pixels

A new Apple feature allows Mac 4K monitors to run at an even higher "Retina" resolution.

According to 9to5Mac.com, which first reported the news, the beta version of Apple's OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 was provided to developers on Thursday including "notable enhancements" for 4K screens.

The monitors featuring the latest Apple OS can be set to run with a "Retina" resolution with double the pixels.

Macs already support 4K monitors, but they just use extra lines of resolution, according to CNET.

The updated OS still in beta "makes content appear as it does on the late-2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display screen while maintaining sharpness," AppleInsider reported. "For most users, this new feature will make 4K displays easier to work with on a day-to-day basis."

The pixel-doubling options can be found in the Displays menu of the OS X System Preferences, according to AppleInsider.

The OS X 10.9.3 beta test came a little more than a week after the OS X 10.9.2 regular update, AppleInsider reported.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company is reportedly asking developers who are using the beta form of the new OS to pay special attention to graphics and audio.

Notes about the release surprisingly didn't include anything about email even after users have sounded off about "erratic" issues with Smart Mailbox and Gmail. Apple has had complaints since the Mail component of the system was added in October, despite a patch and standalone updates for the program since then.
