In an unusual caper last week, a car thief swiped a vehicle and returned it to its original spot--after a detour where he went on a little shopping spree with the victim's credit cards.
Personal trainer Jim Kemeny of Denver, Color., owns the car in question. The thief sneaked into Kemeny's gym last week and took his wallet and keys, Yahoo reported via a local CBS outlet.
"I went out and my car was gone," Kemeny told CBS.
The trainer was in the habit of parking his red Hyundai in spot No. 22, and the vehicle was parked there when it was stolen.
After the thief took the car, he put Kemeny's credit cards to use, doing some shopping and then getting something to eat.
"It was $484.15, and then he went to Subway. I guess he was a little hungry as well," Kemeny described to CBS.
He didn't expect to see the vehicle again, but when Kemeny returned to work on Monday, the car was parked in spot No. 22 as usual.
"It was parked right here and returned right here," Kemeny said. "The car was open, the keys in the middle of the seats. The battery was dead and it was out of fuel."
The unusual incident was the first of its kind, according to Denver police, who told media they didn't recall a car thief ever returning the vehicle.
"I was a little freaked out by it," Kemeny said of the theft and return.
The thief, who hasn't been named by authorities, left Kemeny's car keys in the seat along with a business card of his apparent parole officer.
A $75 parking ticket was also inside the vehicle.
