The next item in the growing Internet of things is elegant tech jewelry that can function as the classiest panic button ever or just let someone know where to meet you for lunch.
Cuff describes its product lineup of bracelets, key chains and necklaces as "smart, elegant security." The jewelry and accessories line works with a pop-out Bluetooth device that pairs with the wearer's smartphone, CNET reported.
The CuffLinc module is interchangeable between the various jewelry pieces, so the buyer isn't stuck with wearing just one accessory all the time.
The Bluetooth device communicates with other Cuff wearers through their smartphones, so users can send "pings" to loved ones or receive them. If you need help or want to let people know your location for another reason, you can squeeze the piece of Cuff jewelry to alert those in your Cuff network. Sending the ping will show them your exact location on their smartphone.
The CuffLinc device is waterproof and is compatible with Bluetooth 4.0-equipped iOS devices, according to CNET. It has a battery that is good for one year without ever having to be recharged.
The device is also smart in that it will "persistently" contact loved ones until someone responds, according to the Cuff website.
Its only smart feature for now is the vibrating alert, but other options could be added in the future. In the long run, Cuff hopes to enlist other jewelry and accessory designers to incorporate the CuffLinc technology into their pieces.
The smart jewelry lineup is available for preorder here and should start shipping this fall. Cuff is currently offering a special pre-sale where buyers can get the $30 CuffLinc device for free with any purchase. Jewelry prices range from $50 to $150 depending on the piece.
