Is it a car? A bike? A boat?
A Michigan manufacturer has created the first amphibious vehicle that can reach speeds of 45 mph on both land and water, USA TODAY reported.
Based in Auburn Hills, Mich., Gibbs Amphibians made waves on Monday when its vehicle lineup was featured on an episode of British TV show "Top Gear" that aired on BBC America.
"It should get the name out there in a big way," Graham Jenkins, sales and marketing manager, told USA TODAY.
In the "Top Gear" episode, the amphibious Quadski races an Alfa Romeo 4C in Italy.
Gibbs' $42,000 quad bike is unique for its ability to achieve speed on any surface and to switch from land to water mode in less than three seconds, according to USA TODAY.
"We're the world's only real manufacturer of amphibious vehicles that reach higher speeds than 5 mph," Jenkins said.
The company plans to sell 1,500 Quadskis this year and expand to other retail locations. About 200 of the amphibious cars were built and sold last year. Completing a Quadski takes about three days, and the land-water vehicle runs on a BMW engine.
The privately owned company is directed by its two founders, who established Gibbs Sports Amphibians in 2007 in Auburn Hills, where it has around 150 employees.
Gibbs Amphibians actually dates back about four years earlier when the company introduced the Aquada, a three-seat sports car available in the United Kingdom. To date, the founders have invested some $200 million.
"If we hit our targets this year, we will be in profits," Jenkins told USA TODAY.
The company has also been working on a 21.5-foot disaster response vehicle and has been testing prototypes that can go off-road, weather 2-foot waves and travel at highway speeds.
The Quadski is available with 16 American dealers at 21 retail outlets. The company hopes to sell the land-water vehicle at around 50 outlets by the end of this year.
