DC comics fans will have to wait a little longer to see the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight go head to head. Warner Bros. announced on Friday that the release of the new Batman-Superman movie will be delayed nine months until summer 2016, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The Batman-Superman film, which will star Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams, had been scheduled for July 2015 but is now slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
The Zack Snyder-directed project isn't officially titled yet but goes by "Batman vs. Superman" on its IMDB page. The later release will give "the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story," according to the studio.
The film's production was recently pushed to start in the second quarter of this year instead of in the winter as first planned, EW reported.
The July 17, 2015 release slot will be filled a live action "Peter Pan" film directed by Joe Wright. The project is not yet titled.
"We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next Super Hero film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, said as quoted by EW.
"The summer release corridor is also perfect for Joe Wright's ambitious new Peter Pan adventure, reimagining the ageless story of the beloved and forever-young hero for audiences worldwide."
The Hollywood Reporter noted that the switch in release dates sets up a potential Marvel and DC showdown, since Disney/Marvel has set an untitled Marvel film for the same May date.
Marvel, which is home to such superheroes as Iron Man, Spider-man and Captain America, has enjoyed blockbuster May releases in the past with "Iron Man 3," "The Avengers" and "Spider-man."
A Marvel film has been released each May since 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
