Despite falling short of 20,000 vehicles sold in the U.S., Tesla Motors did sell over 25,000 vehicles globally in 2013, according to a report by Gas2.org.

The EV automaker sold approximately 25,343 to 25,503 vehicles worldwide in 2013, according to the report.

Tesla doesn't release monthly sales numbers, so the total is a combination of estimates from countries all-around the world.

Production for Tesla's flagship vehicle, the Model S, started in 2012.

The Model S competes with similar EVs like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, both of which have been on the market for twice as long as the Tesla vehicle.

Tesla sold around 19,000 vehicles in North America last year, according to Gas2.org. Over 3,600 units were sold in Europe.

Tesla's Model X vehicle will begin production sometime later this year, which could help increase Tesla's overall sales numbers in 2014.

Tesla received some good news a few weeks ago, as the 5-star safety rating for the Model S had been reaffirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The automaker took a huge hit after two car fires occurred in Tennessee, and Washington. Another one also occurred in Mexico, but the U.S. is not allowed to investigate cases outside the country.

The Model S is sold for a base price of $69,900 and has a fuel economy rating of up to 94 city/ 97 highway, according to the automaker.
