Facebook has launched a donation feature where users can enter their credit card numbers and give to charities with a simple click.
The "Donate Now" button will show up on the pages of participating nonprofits, CNET reported. Facebook members who have made purchases on the social network in the past can donate in just two clicks, the outlet said. Users who haven't bought anything on Facebook before can enter their credit card information, which Facebook will automatically keep in its system.
"In November 2013, in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, we partnered with the International Federation of Red Cross to let people donate directly to the Red Cross' relief efforts in the Philippines," Facebook said in a press release. "After seeing the generosity of people around the world toward this effort, we've been inspired to help everyone donate, at any time, to the organizations they care about most."
CNET noted that while the donation option will make it easier for people to give to worthy causes, it will also help Facebook, since the site will retain credit card information and continue to build its database of numbers.
In the past year, the site has been working on features that require payment; some examples include allowing users to message people they don't know for a fee, selling gifts and trying out a "pay with Facebook" option.
Facebook's attempt to sell physical gifts such as teddy bears, flower arrangements and cookie baskets was unsuccessful, CNET reported.
After a year of trying out the gift shop, the company decided to nix all physical gifts in favor of gift cards, which accounted for about 80 percent of sales. The new Facebook gift shop launched in August.
The company also debuted the "Autofill with Facebook" payment option in September at a handful of retailers. The payment service lets users store their address and credit card information with Facebook and buy products at select stores using their Facebook log-ins.
