Billy Joel Becomes MSG's House Band, Will Play Monthly Shows 'Indefinitely'

Six-time Grammy winner Billy Joel revealed at a New York press conference that he will play Madison Square Garden once a month "indefinitely" as long as there is a demand by his fans.

"Playing Madison Square Garden is an experience that never gets old," Joel said. "A show a month at the Garden for as long as there's demand means more opportunities to connect with music fans and provides a unique and memorable show every time we play here."

Joel's residency starts January 27th, 2014, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Additional shows will take place on February 3rd, March 21st, April 18th, and May 9th. Shows past May have yet to be announced.

Once Joel was done speaking at the event, a new Billy Joel MSG logo was revealed, which will be placed next to similar ones used for the Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty, according to Rolling Stone.

"Billy, having you as our music franchise feels a little like having the Pope as your parish priest," said MSG Executive Chairman James Dolan at the event, according to RS. "I'm truly an admirer and I grew up with your music, too, and so I'm thrilled to death."

MSG officials repeated multiple times at the press conference that there is no end date to the residency and it would continue "as long as there is demand."

This the first time that a major artist has announced a residency outside of Las Vegas. Artists who have taken residency recently at Las Vegas includes likes of Elton John, Cher, and Britney Spears.

The Kennedy Center honoree's next show will take place on New Year's Eve at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He will then play four shows in Florida in January before his big MSG show.

Joel hasn't performed a solo concert in the U.S. since 2008 after coming out of retirement.

"I've been touring almost all my life," Joel said, according to USA Today.  "The idea of being on the road for long periods of time isn't appealing to me at this point. With his new arrangement with the Garden, "I can commute to work, like everyone else does. You take the schlep factor out."

Joel has sold over 150 million records worldwide, according to Billboard.com.
