Sparks Middle School Shooting Update: Shooter Killed a Teacher, Injured Two Students Before Committing Suicide (VIDEO)

Two people were killed at a Nevada middle school during a shootout earlier today, Oct. 21, including the suspected gunman. The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m.

A staff member at Sparks Middle School, believed to be a teacher, was killed while trying to protect students at school according to the Associated Press.

The teacher reportedly tried to get the student to lower the weapon before being shot. Once the teacher was hit, everyone started to run, according to a student who attends the school.

No shots were fired by police, as the gunman was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Two other students were critically injured by the unidentified gunman. One is already out of surgery, while the other is okay, according to police. They were taken to Renown Regional Hospital.

"We came flying down here to get our kids," said Mike Fiorica, whose nephew attends the school, according to the Associated Press. "It's really chaotic. You can imagine how parents are feeling. You don't know if your kid's OK."

Around 630 Students at the middle school and the nearby elementary school were evacuated to the nearby high school. All classes were canceled.

The school has since been declared "safe," but it is still an active crime scene.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning," said Gov. Brian Sandoval, in a press statement. "My administration is receiving regular updates and the Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene."

Around 150 to 200 officers responded to the shooting.
