Mazda has announced it's recalling 161,400 Mazda 6 sedans in the U.S. because loose screws could cause doors to open while the car is being driven.
The affected vehicles were built from February 4, 2008 through August 24, 2012 in Flat Rock, Michigan, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The door latch mounting screws may become loose," said NHTSA in its summary of the issue. "If all three door latch mounting screws become excessively loose, the door latch mechanism would not engage and the door might open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of accident or injury."
NHTSA launched an investigation in May after receiving a number of complaints related to the problem.
Mazda dealers will instructed to remove the door latch mounting screws on each door, apply a thread locking adhesive and retighten the screws to the specified torque, according to the NHTSA.
Missing screws will be replaced, free of charge.
The recall is expected to begin on October 18.
