Seven vehicles received top marks in a brand new crash avoidance test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The seven vehicles include: the 2013 Cadillac ATS and SRX, the 2013 Volvo S60 and XC60, the 2013 Subaru Legacy and Outback, and the 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
"Active safety systems have great amounts of promise," said David Strickland, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We want to see more of these systems in the fleet."
Each vehicle received a "Superior" rating for the ability of their safety systems to "substantially reduce speeds" or avoid crashes during each test, according to an IIHS press release.
IIHS tested each model's braking and forward collision warning systems at speeds of up to 25 mph.
Eight vehicles received the next highest ranking "Advanced," and 31 received a "Basic" mark.
"Front crash prevention systems can add $1,000 or more to the cost of a new car. Our new ratings let consumers know which systems offer the most promise for the extra expense," said David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Front-to-rear crashes are the most frequent to occur on the road, so improved safety systems could help reduce the amount of injuries that take place.
The Volvo vehicles tested were the only ones tested by the IIHS with standard automatic braking. Both the S60 and XC60 received a superior rating when also equipped with the optional Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection, according to IIHS.
"This is really the future of both automotive safety and safety testing," said Karl Brauer, an analyst at auto information company KBB.com, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The IIHS ratings will encourage more automakers to provide this level of protection in the coming years."
