The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 110,000 2013 Infiniti JXs and Nissan Pathfinders after receiving a number of complaints over an issue with the vehicle's transmission.
Owners have told the NHTSA that the vehicles can suddenly lose power from the transmission due to the loss of the transmission fluid, according to Reuters.
No crashes or injuries linked to the issue have been reported as of press time.
"The owners allege that the failures caused a sudden loss of power from the transmission due to the loss of the transmission fluid," said NHTSA in a statement regarding the issue.
Federal safety investigators said that they will evaluate the vehicles to check the "scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences" of the possible defect.
A recall has not been announced as of press time, but that doesn't mean one won't come in the future.
"Nissan received a request for information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concerning reports of transmission fluid leaks at the cooler line in 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti JX vehicles," said Nissan North America in a statement according to Edmunds. "We are working with the agency to address their questions. A repair procedure has already been developed for use where necessary by authorized Nissan/Infiniti dealers for those few vehicles that did experience this issue."
Nissan spokesman Steve Yaeger said that the company is working with the NHTSA to "address the agency's concerns," according to Reuters.
