Bay Area officials warned commuters this week that they will increase service while the Bay Bridge is closed during Labor Day weekend until it reopens on Sept. 3.

"We encourage everyone to plan ahead and allow more time to get where they need to go," Bay Bridge spokesman Andrew Gordon said according to CBS News.

The Bay Bridge will be closed in both directions starting at 8 p.m. today, Aug. 28, to complete work that must be finished before the new eastern span can be opened to the public.

Commuters can expect the bridge to be reopened at approximately 5 a.m. next Tuesday, but it could be re-opened before that if worked is completed early.

"Thursday and Friday it's going to be very busy so we're encouraging people to either use the ferries or modify their plans not to travel in the peak 8-8:30 in the morning and 5-5:30 in the afternoon," BART spokesperson Jim Allison said, according to ABC News.

Allison said BART will try helping people who rely on the bridge by running longer trains on Aug. 29-30.

BART will also run 24-hour service at 14 different stations according to CBS News.

Overnight service will not be provided by BART on Sept. 2 through the following morning because it has to close tracks for a small period of time to "perform maintenance work and inspections. They're expecting the Bay Bridge to be reopened at this time.

"People should do a little research and load up their Clipper Card ahead of time so they don't have to wait in line to buy tickets because we expect very busy ridership days," said Allison in a press statement.
