Tropical Storm Ivo formed on Aug. 24 in the eastern Pacific Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was heading north at approximately 6 mph. It was last spotted 185 miles west of Cabo San Lucas.
"The combination of the ongoing monsoon and moisture from Tropical Storm Ivo over the eastern Pacific will bring heavy rainfall to portions of the Southwest Sunday and Monday," reports AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
A tropical storm warning was issued for the Pacific coast of the peninsular from Punta Abreojos to Cabo San Lucas, and for the Gulf of California coast of the peninsular from Loreto to Cabo San Lucas.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Pacific coast of Baja California north of Punta Abreojos to Punta Eugenia, according to the Associated Press.
Ivo is likely to bring more rain throughout the weekend to previously mentioned locations. It is the ninth storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season according to the National Hurricane Center.
"The possibility is there for flash flooding and heavy rain," said Bob Smerbeck, an expert senior meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania. "We're concerned for Phoenix, Las Vegas, Yuma and that whole Colorado River valley. It's good to get the rain but it's not good to get it too fast."
The storm could bring life-threatening waves to the shore and as much as five inches of rain to select locations.
Though the center of the storm is expected to weaken by Aug. 25, rain from the storm could still affect the Southwest next week.
