Bobby Dale Earnhardt, the grandson of Dale Earnhardt and nephew of Dale Earnhardt Jr., was arrested on drunk-driving charges in West Virginia on Aug. 12.

Earnhardt, 25, was pulled over after a Charleston police officer saw him make a left turn at a high speed according to TMZ.

Earnhardt released a press statement after being released from prison.

"I wanted to let you all know I made a terrible mistake last night drinking and driving and I am thankful nothing bad happened from my stupidity and I know It could have," said Earnhardt in the statement, according to Yahoo Sports. "I'm sorry for letting all my fans friends and family down and I hope I can make it up to each and everyone of you and in the future be a good role model. I will continue to move forward with my racing career and I hope I continue to have your support thanks."

The officer at the scene said Earnhardt's eyes were "glassy" and his speech was slurred. The officer also said Earnhardt smelled like alcohol according to the Associated Press.

Police said Earnhardt's blood alcohol level was .193, over twice West Virginia's legal limit of .08. He was officially charged with first-offense driving under the influence.

"He was asked to get out of the vehicle where he was unsteady and when asked he said he only had 2 shots of alcohol," police said according to TMZ.

He spent the night in the South Central Jail before being released on Aug. 13. If convicted, he could face up to six months in jail and may have to face a fine of $500.

Earnhardt plans on racing in the 2013 ARCA Truck Series to gain driving experience.
