An 8-year-old boy was killed on July 4 after his father ran over during a parade in Oklahoma.

The boy was riding on a Fourth of July parade float with his Tae Kwon Do classmates as part of the annual LibertyFest in Edmond, Oklahoma according to NBC News.

His father, who was driving the truck that pulled the float, struck him after he either jumped or fell off the float. Police have started investigating the incident.

"We've been speaking with witnesses," officer James Hamm said to NBC's Oklahoma City affiliate, KFOR.com. "Some have said he kind of physically got off and some he looked like he may have fell. So we're just trying to determine which one of those is accurate."

A nurse, who happened to be riding in a trailer behind them, tried to administer CPR to the boy but was unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead after arriving at UC Presbyterian Hospital according to NBC.

All of the parade entrants built their floats and were asked to operate their own floats according to LibertyFest President Robby Allen. They're required to have valid driving license and can attend a pre parade briefing.

"This is our 41st (Fourth of July) parade on record and we've never had a serious injury before," said Allen said to KFOR.com. "To the best of my knowledge we've never had an injury that required medical transportation."

The boy's father stayed at the scene until learning his son had not survived. Everyone who witnessed the incident have stressed to police that it was an accident and there was nothing that could have been done to prevent it from happening.

Names involved in the incident have not been released as of press time.

"The police department does these events, we work security because we want families to come out here and celebrate the Fourth of July and for everybody to be safe in a fun family atmosphere and it is always that," Hamm told KFOR.com of the Fourth of July accident. "We usually don't have any problems everybody follows the guidelines. Today they weren't really doing anything wrong."
