General Motors vehicles won eight awards in the annual J.D. Power & Associates survey of initial quality, another sign that the company has turned itself around after a 2009 bankruptcy.

Chevrolet, which represents 71 percent of General Motors' U.S. sales, leaped 10 spots to No. 5 on J.D. Power's initial quality ratings of new vehicles among 33 brands according to Reuters.

"GM's always been good at improving a vehicle once it's come to market," David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power, said in a press statement. "What they're also showing to be pretty good at now is launching vehicles with pretty good quality too."

Sargent said GM has "done an outstanding job" of trying to change the perception that its vehicles are of "inferior quality" compared to other companies.

In the past, GM has been guilty of introducing new products with a number of problems and then improved those models after their already released.

The J.D. Power survey, which is in its 27th year, allowed people to fill out surveys online regarding their experiences in the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership for the first time ever.

GMC and Chevrolet were the top-rated non-luxury brands in the survey according to Reuters. GMC leaped 10 spots in the J.D. Power initial quality ratings.

Honda Motor Co.'s luxury brand Acura, Tata Motor's luxury Jaguar brand, and Hyundai Motor Co.

In previous years, J.D. Power selected people "seeking a wide national representation of consumers" according to the company's website.

This year's survey was changed to add more consumer feedback on the quality of new technologies such as lane-departure, navigation, information-entertainment and voice-activated systems, and telephone.
