High-speed collisions can cause serious injuries and/or fatalities, which is why it's so important to stick to the speed limit when you're on the road. Sadly, a considerable proportion of accidents involve speeding drivers.

According to the latest statistics, more than 16,800 crashes in Missouri and 3,375 crashes in St Louis County involved speeding drivers, which highlights just how dangerous it is to travel above the limit.

Despite this, many drivers inadvertently exceed the limit and, fortunately, this doesn't always result in an accident. When caught, however, a speeding driver will face consequences that could result in the revocation or suspension of their license

How Does the Missouri Points System Work?

In Missouri, drivers are given points for driving infractions, such as speeding or failing to stop at a stop sign. Under state law, you can receive three points for driving 5 mph higher than the posted limit, for example.

If you accumulate a certain number of points over a 12-, 18-, 24- or 36-month period, your driving privileges will be revoked or suspended.

As drivers don't want to lose their license, they may try to have a speeding ticket (and associated points) removed from their record.

Can a Speeding Ticket Be Removed from Your Record?

If you believe you have been given a speeding ticket in error, you can dispute the ticket and ask the courts to issue an order to have it removed from your record. If you're successful, the ticket and associated points won't impact on your driving privileges.

However, points don't remain on your driving record forever. Even if you were speeding and were given the ticket fairly, the points will automatically be reduced by one third if you go 12 months without receiving any additional points. After two years without gaining any points, the remaining points are reduced by half and, after three years, they are reduced to zero.

So, even if you have points on your record due to a speeding ticket, sticking to the limit and adhering to the rules of the road will ensure that your driving record is cleansed over time.

Have You Been Hurt by a Speeding Driver?

If you've been injured because of a speeding driver, you'll know just how important it is to deter people from breaking the speed limit. In a single year in Missouri, more than 5,400 personal injury crashes occurred because a driver was exceeding the limit or driving too fast for the conditions and it's possible that these collisions could have been avoided.

By taking legal action against the person responsible for the crash, personal injury lawyers in St Louis can help you to obtain compensation for the harm you've experienced. Furthermore, claiming compensation after an accident may encourage other drivers to stick to the speed limit in the future.

The financial implications of a collision can be serious, particularly if you're incurring high medical bills. With help from car accident attorneys, however, you can ensure that you obtain a fair amount of compensation and that your financial future isn't negatively impacted by a crash that wasn't your fault.
