Tesla Motors is set to unveil its new battery swap technology at an event in California this week according to company CEO Elon Musk.

Musk took to Twitter to announce that Tesla will demonstrate its new battery swap technology on June 20.

The announcement confirmed rumored reports that the company would be soon provide Tesla Model S owners a way of driving longer distances without having to stop and re-charge.

Tesla is likely to show off a redesigned chassis that will provide drivers an easier way of removing the battery from the vehicle according to GigaOm. Once the vehicle's battery loses its charge, it can then be swapped out for a new, fully charged one within a matter of minutes.

The process would take approximately the same amount of time it takes to fill up a car with gas according to Tesla.

If they're successful with their current plan, Tesla could start providing battery swap stations near previously announced Supercharger stations to make it easier for Tesla drivers to find new batteries while out on the road.

"Traditional charging has been way too slow and it's not effective for long-distance travel," Musk said in an onstage interview at a conference in California according to Bloomberg Businessweek. "When people buy a car they're also acquiring a sense of freedom."

Musk recently confirmed that Tesla is planning on opening at least 100 Superstations by 2015 to make Tesla vehicles seem more appealing to those who are afraid of being stranded on the road during their commute.

Currently, Tesla owners are limited due to an estimated 265-mile range of battery charge according to Musk. Only nine charging stations are currently available.
