The long wait is almost over for the Ferrari Purosangue, with the Italian luxury carmaker confirming in its 2021 sales report that production of the SUV will begin later this year. Ferrari announced that deliveries of the Purosangue will start in 2023, so expect a full debut of the car to come in the second half of this year.

It is not a complete surprise to see Ferrari enter the high-performance SUV market, which is big business nowadays. Last year, nearly 60 percent of Lamborghini's sales came courtesy of the Urus, with the Italian manufacturer selling just over 5,000 units of the 641-horsepower SUV worldwide.

Aston Martin has also benefited with its DBX, with the luxury SUV helping boost the British automaker's sales by 82 percent last year. Aston Martin wants a bigger share of the pie as it recently announced a nearly 700-horsepower version of the DBX.

Ferrari looks to beat Lambo and Aston Martin in the luxury SUV market

Lamborghini and Aston Martin will soon have a formidable opponent in the market, with Ferrari eager to turn Purosangue into a money-making machine. It is expected to cost more than the $225,501 Lamborghini Urus and the $179,986 Aston Martin DBX SUVs, with some estimating its starting price at over $300,000.

Not much is known about the Purosangue, but rumors are swirling regarding the SUV's power unit. One option being floated around is a turbocharged V-8 with hybrid assistance. Ferrari could put the twin-turbo V-8 plug-in-hybrid setup found in the SF90 under the hood of the Purosangue.

Another possibility for Ferrari's much-awaited SUV is the 819-horsepower V-6 hybrid powertrain currently used by the 296 GTB. Some have even suggested that Ferrari could offer a V-12 to the Purosangue. This engine will likely be electrified if that is the case since Ferrari has announced that the 812 Competizione will be its final non-hybrid internal combustion V-12 car.

Longer EV range expected for Purosangue

The Purosangue is expected to have a much longer EV range than the 296 GTB and the SF90, with the Italian brand set to power the SUV with a bigger battery pack. Electrification is all the rage in the auto industry, and Ferrari is expected to utilize that technology with its debut vehicle in the SUV market.

Auto website Motor1.com has managed to snap pictures of the fully camouflaged prototype of the Purosangue just this week. According to Motor1, the Ferrari SUV looks more like an enlarged hatchback with a lifted suspension. The rear doors of the test vehicle look quite small, giving an appearance that it is not roomy for passengers sitting in the back.

What is certain at the moment is that the Purosangue will ride on a new platform with the SUV having multiple engine options, a four-seat interior, all-wheel drive, and support for air suspension.
