This week, a unique Ford Mustang or Bronco was sold, with Barrett-Jackson auctioning off these two special units in Scottsdale. These two examples are the first production unit of the 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR and a one-off 2021 Ford Bronco 66 First Edition. Also going under the hammer alongside these two rare Ford vehicles is a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 continuation car.

The said auction is for a good cause, with funds generated from the sales of the three cars going to select awareness programs and charities across the United States. Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson pointed this out in a statement, saying, "We're continuing our legacy of giving back to our communities with many incredible charity vehicles crossing the block in Scottsdale."

Proceeds from the Scottsdale auction will support two main charities, namely the Carroll Shelby Foundation and the JDRF. The Carroll Shelby Foundation helps raise funds for kids with life-threatening illnesses as well as support educational programs related to the automotive industry. JDRF is an organization that helps in researching cures for type 1 diabetes.

'King of the Road' Shelby GT500KR takes center stage

Taking center stage in the auction was the Shelby GT500KR. It is the first of the King of the Road units being put together by Ford to pay homage to Shelby American's 60th anniversary. The tuning firm came together with Ford to create a version of the Mustang that has a very impressive spec sheet.

For only the third time in its history, Ford has anointed King of the Road status to one of its vehicles. The ST550 Mustang Shelby GT500KR promises to live up to that lofty tag, as it sports a massive 5.2-liter Predator V8 engine.

That engine has a twin-screw Whipple supercharger, which can displace 3.8 liters on its own, helping the vehicle generate up to 900 horsepower. An open cold air intake system and a high-volume intercooler provide assistance to this edition based on the GT500.

The Mustang GT500KR's exterior elements are also pleasing to the eye, such as its front splitter, rear diffuser, and carbon-fiber hood. Only 225 of these Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR vehicles will be made available worldwide, with 180 cars reserved for the USA. Only 60 vehicles are being built per model year from 2020-22, making the Mustang Shelby GT500KR a rare commodity.

1965 Shelby Cobra and 2021 Ford Bronco 66 up for sale

The 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C CSX continuation car that went under the hammer is powered by a 7.0-liter V8 that Yates built. This engine pushes 540 horsepower to the rear axle via a Salisbury differential and a manual gearbox. The unit was completed by Speedway Classic Cars in Las Vegas.

The Bronco 66 model was put together with the help of Ford, with the winning bid going straight to the Pope Francis Center. The vehicle that went up for auction pays homage to the 1980 Bronco that Ford built for Pope John Paul II during his visit to America back in 1979.
