A 15-year-old boy was arrested on this week on suspicion he stabbed his two younger brothers, ages 10 and four, to death at their family home while their mother was out running errands according to Reuters.

The Utah boy was taken into custody a day after the bodies of his brothers were found dead with what appeared to be "penetrating knife wounds," said Sergeant Susan Poulsen of the Davis County Sheriff's Office.

"As a result of our investigation, this morning we have taken the 15-year-old juvenile into custody," Poulsen said, adding that prosecutors were expected to formally charge the boy on Monday according to Reuters. "We believe he acted alone."

Police went to the house on May 22 after the boys' mother called 911 around 7:30 p.m. local time. The mother told a dispatcher she had returned from running errands to find her 4-year-old son "dead on the floor."

The woman also said that her two older sons were missing. The father of the boys, who is on active duty in the U.S. military according to CBS News, was out of town at the time of the murders.

The names of the victims and the boy arrested are being withheld by authorities because of their age according to Reuters.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and found the body of the 10-year-old boy inside the home, and launched a search in and around Salt Lake City for the older brother.

The brother was found at approximately 12:00 a.m. "five to seven miles away" in a nearby community. The boy was reportedly "in good condition," but was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injury according to police.

Police have declined to comment on his mental status and the evidence that led to his arrest.

"We had enough probable cause to arrest him on suspicion of homicide," Poulsen said according to Reuters.
