Toyota to Recall 11,489 FJ Cruiser Vehicles Due to Headlines That May Blind Drivers

Toyota has recalled approximately 11,489 vehicles due to excessively bright headlights according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall includes FJ Cruiser vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2013. The models are equipped with a Toyota Auxiliary Driving Lamp K, which is mounted to the front bumper.

The 55-watt light bulbs are brighter than allowed by federal law, and can "dazzle" oncoming drivers, increasing the chance of a crash according to the NHTSA.

"Excessively bright lamps may temporarily blind oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a crash," said the NHTSA.

Toyota has agreed to replace the 55-watt light bulbs in all the vehicles with 35-watt bulbs for free, and will also install new mounting brackets that re-orient the light beams.

The NHTSA also claims that the vehicles fail to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 which deals with lamps, reflective devices and other equipment.

Toyota will begin notifying owners in the mail once the recall officially begins later this month.

"These lamp assemblies include 55 watt bulbs and due to this wattage, the combination of the upper beam headlamps plus the auxiliary lamps are too bright and exceed the maximum light output allowed for an upper beam headlamp," said the NHTSA in a summary of the problem.
