The new Toyota RAV 4 received a "Very Good" overall score in Consumer Reports tests this week, a good sign for the redesigned model, but it wasn't enough to help the model reclaim its title as best small SUV.

The new Toyota fell behind the Honda CR-V and the newest Mazda CX-5 according to Consumer Reports. The CR-V was named Consumer Reports 2013 Top Pick, and only one point separates it from the new RAV 4 according to a Consumer Reports press release.

"The good news for consumers is that the Small SUV category is a very tight and competitive race with a number of solid vehicles to choose from," said Jake Fisher , director, Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in a press release.

Official tests results and ratings of the RAV4 and CX-5 can be seen on Consumer Reports website now and in the June issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale May 7. The CR-V was tested earlier this year according to the company press release.

The redesigned model includes three driving modes: an Auto mode, Lock mode, and Sport mode. The Auto mode engages all-wheel drive only if the front wheels slip up according to Ask.Cars.com. The Lock mode keeps all-wheel drive "engaged", where as the Sport mode send approximately 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels depending on corning speeds and steering-wheel position.

Using over 50 labs, auto test centers, and survey research center Consumer Reports rates thousands of products and services yearly. Since 1936, Consumer Reports has over 8 million subscribers to its magazine, website, and other publications.

"In a crowded, competitive class, the Mazda6 often gets overlooked by people shopping for a midsized sedan. But with the 2014 redesign, it makes a strong case for the spotlight by blending eye-catching, coupe-like styling, a sporty driving character, and excellent fuel efficiency," said Fisher.
