Guinness World Records recently decided to reinstate Bugatti Veyron's record as the world's fastest car this week after stripping the record away after learning the car's speed limiter had been deactivated during initial testing according to a report by Time magazine.
Just last week, Guinness World Records took away the record from the Veyron after learning the top speed limiter was deactivated during the record-setting test run in 2010. Guinness claimed this was against the rules and that the model being tested must be completely identical to the one the company released to the public.
"This modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle's record set at 431.072 km/h is no longer valid," said a Veyron spokesman last week according to the National Post. "Following this, Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field."
A limiter is a device that "prevents a vehicle from exceeding a given velocity" according to Time. Many commercial models use limiters for safety reasons to prevent vehicles from going over a specific speed limit.
When the Veyron model was tested in 2010, the speed limiter installed that puts the vehicle's limit at 258 mph was turned off.
"The focus of the review was with respect to what may constitute a modification to a car's standard specification," said a Veyron spokesman according to the National Post. "Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car of its engine."
The vehicle was tested going 267.8 m.p.h. back in 2010, a record for a production car.
Hennessey Performance had an issue with the world record run, since their Venom GT production vehicle can go 265.7 mph. Guinness World Records debated on stripping the title away from Veyron, but had a change of heart this week as they feel that speed limiters don't matter when it comes to setting performance records.
"Following a thorough review conducted with a number of external experts, Guinness World Records is pleased to announce the confirmation of Bugatti's record of fastest production car achieved by the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport," a Guinness World Record spokesman said in a press statement. The focus of the review was with respect to what may constitute a modification to a car's standard specification. Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine."
