Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers were on routine patrol at 2:20 a.m. yesterday, Mar. 19, when they encountered a "suspicious person" sitting in his car parked at a Red Roof Inn hotel according to NBC.
Officer David Miller spoke with the man, a Kalamazoo resident, who said he had accidentally hit a deer with his own car on a nearby road.
After the man told Miller he was planning on using the meat from the deer to feed his family, Miller asked if he could inspect the deer to make sure it was properly tagged according to MLive.com.
"The officer merely wanted to check on the tagging of the deer to make sure it was appropriately tagged with a kill permit or accident permit," said KDPS Lt. Stacey Geik according to NBC.
The man agreed and opened the trunk for the officers. After doing so however, it was obvious the deer was still alive.
The deer quickly sprang out of the trunk, and after collecting itself it pranced away from the three individuals.
Michigan's nearly 2 million deer are most active in the spring and fall, and every year there are approximately 60,000 deer-vehicle crashes reported in Michigan according to the Associated Press.

By law, if a motorist hits a deer, he or she can request to keep it to use the meat, but have to report the incident and obtain the proper state deer kill permit according to NBC.
