Cadillac revealed today details for a new Twin-Turbo engine and eight-speed transmission, the first for the Cadillac and its all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS midsize luxury sedan. The new car will premiere at next week's New York Auto Show according to a company press release.

The Twin-Turbo V-6 already being advertised as "the most power-dense six-cylinder" engine in the midsize luxury segment according to the GM and the specs they've detailed seem to back that claim up.

The 3.6L, 118 horsepower eight-speed automatic not only enhances the fuel economy of the vehicle but the acceleration overall compared to a six-speed.

"The new Cadillac Twin-Turbo brings a new dimension of technologically advanced performance to the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan," said David Leone, executive chief engineer in the press release. "Delivering power and sophistication, it marks another large step forward in the product-driven expansion of Cadillac."

The vehicle was rated at an SAE-certified 420 horsepower and approximately 430 lb.-ft. of torque, which makes it the most powerful V-6 engine GM has ever produced. It reportedly has 15 percent greater power density than say the BMW 535i's turbocharged 3.0L six, which is rated at approximately 300 hp.

The new engine, along with a number of different features, helps the vehicle reach 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and achieve an overall top speed of 170 mph.

The new Twin-Turbo was designed to expand the performance envelope of the soon to be released 2014 CTS midsize luxury sedan. The new sedans are set to launch this fall in the United States, and the engine will also will be offered in the 2014 XTS large luxury sedan this fall.

In every way, the new engine an upgrade over the 3.6L DOHC V-6 that can be found in vehicles like the SRX, ATS, and XTS currently.

New features that car enthusiasts can expect include brand-new cylinder block castings, cylinder head castings, patented, integrated charge air cooler system, vacuum-actuated wastegates with electronic control valves, and all-new direct injection fuel system.

"The high-tumble heads were developed with advanced modeling programs that helped us determine the optimal design in less time and with less trial and error," said Richard Bartlett, assistant chief engineer for the 3.6L engine according to the company release. "Literally hundreds of simulations were performed to optimize the port flow, injector spray angle and pattern, and piston topology to produce a highly efficient yet powerful combustion chamber."
