Volkswagen AG announced they will recall vehicles in China to fix gearbox issues after harsh criticism by state-run China Central Television's (CCTV) annual show about anti-consumer practices according to Reuters.

VW's direct shift gearbox transmission, which has been an issue multiple times in the past for the German company, has caused cars to speed up or slow down on its own while at any given time according to CCTV's "3.15" special which aired Mar. 16 according to Reuters.

During the TV broadcast, Volkswagen models including Golf, Magotan and Sagitar were mentioned as having "faulty direct-shift gearbox systems" according to the Wall Street Journal.

Early reports indicate that this could become one of the biggest Volkswagen recalls ever, as China recently introduced new legislation in 2013 that grants "watchdog" companies to impose fines and order company investigations if a manufacturer "fails to recall products in a timely manner" according to Reuters.

Since May 2012, the company has sold approximately 1 million vehicles equipped with DSG in China alone. If any models sold before 2012 are found to have issues, the recall would easily surpass 1 million vehicles according to Bloomberg News.

The largest automotive company in Europe did not provide further details about the recall other than it was "voluntary" and that it was due to problems the gearbox systems. After the show aired, Volkswagen promised they would look into the reported issue.

The amount of vehicles involved in the recall has yet to be revealed as of press time.

The statement announcing the recall came shortly after China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine stated they told the company to conduct the recall.
