A California mortuary has admitted to making a mistake by putting a woman in the wrong casket and burying her according to the Associated Press.

Evans Davidson, 73, complained to the Inglewood mortuary that the woman in the casket at her viewing in fact wasn't his wife. The morticians didn't believe Davidson, despite the fact that he was married to the woman, Darlene Davidson, for 51 years.

"I looked at her and said, 'Well this don't look like my wife at all,'" Davidson said to KABC-TV of his 82-year-old wife. "They kept telling me it was, but it's just because she had been embalmed and she was sick."

Davidson then stated just a few days after the burial that another family was claiming a "body switch" and was asked to come down to the Simpson Mortuary to see if that person was his wife. Davidson was able to identify the body, leaving the mortuary in an awkward position.

After admitting to both families that there had been a mix up, the mortuary has offered to switch the bodies into the proper caskets and pay for all expenses for both families to have a proper service.

Davidson has hired an attorney and asked the state Cemetery and Funeral Bureau to investigate the mortuary to make sure other families don't have to go through the same issue according to KABC-TV.

"Our main concern is for these people to receive the dignity and respect they deserve, and put the individual to rest. We are not sweeping it under the rug," mortuary spokesman Reginald Black said in a press statement according to KABC-TV. "We made an error and we want to rectify our error and do whatever we can do to make them feel better."
