AMD Ryzen CPUs Widely Available But the AM4 Motherboards Are Another Story

The AMD Ryzen CPUs were launched earlier this year and have been selling well. Ironically, while everyone was busy trying to get their hands on the new CPU, the Ryzen motherboards sold out right away.

According to a report by Kit Guru, the new Ryzen 7 processors have gotten great reviews. Many are even thinking about building a new AMD-based system while waiting for the upcoming Vega 10 GPUs. Unfortunately, the supported motherboards are in low supply.

According to the report, the X370 and the B350 motherboards are increasingly difficult to find now. Retailers such as Amazon are only offering them on a pre-order basis at the moment while awaiting new stock. This has resulted in a lot of gamers having boxes of peripherals that are just sitting there without an AM4 motherboard to attach them to.

Another report by Extreme Tech also noted that the AMD Ryzen CPU units are really selling well. In particular, they are occupying multiple spots on Amazon's best-selling CPU list at numbers 9, 10, and 15.

Apparently, the real problem is AMD's whole approach to their launch. Several vendors have voiced out their frustrations against the chipmaker who made their rollout too aggressively.

In addition, Ryzen chips didn't look all that promising initially. Motherboard makers were not very impressed with the chip's first engineering samples so they continued their efforts with Intel. As a result, major motherboard manufacturers did not produce that many X370 and B350 boards because they were unsure about how they would sell.

By the time the AMD CPU's starting to look promising, motherboard manufacturers could not get the UEFI testing and feature specifications to be done in time. The company should have given samples or informed the manufacturers beforehand.

The AMD Ryzen CPUs are selling very well for enthusiastic gamers. With the coming of the Vega 10 in May, they were all set for their new AMD gaming setups. Hopefully, new stock will be available by the time the new Vega GPUs are released.
