German fine tuning company Alpina has long been in the game of modifying BMWs but the debut of the XD3 Bi-Turbo marks the Bavarian partnership's first foray into an SUV.
The Bi-Turbo fittingly makes use of a twin turbocharged 3.0 liter six-cylinder diesel. It's the same engine as the BMW X3 xDrive35d but it's been modified to the tune of 350 horsepower and 516 pounds-per-foot of torque, making for a mighty quick SUV.
The XD3 Bi-Turbo can make the standard zero to 60 (well technically 62) mph run in 4.9 seconds.
Looking arguably more swish than a Land Rover, the classy SUV gets better gas milage than some sedans with its 34.5 miles per gallon.
The founder of Alpina, Burkard Bovensiepens, was on floor of the 83rd International Geneva Motor Show to speak about the XD3 Bi-Turbo.
He pointed the inceasing popularity of SUVs and said it was time for Alpina to create something for people who "value the versatility and space of an SUV" but want an efficient car as well.
Bovensiepens said the XD3 Bi-Turbo is for people who "like a very strong SUV but low fluid consumption."
One reason for the car's low fuel consumption is that it's 300 kilograms liter than the big SUVs, said Bovensiepens.
Too bad for Americans though, the XD3 Bi-Turbo is only available in Europe.
