Ford and Subaru Recall Will Affect Nearly 250,000 Vehicles

Recalls announced Wednesday and Thursday by Ford and Subaru, respectively, will affect nearly 250,000 vehicles in the U.S.

Ford Motor Corp. is recalling about 196,500 minivans because of a corrosion problem that prevents rear seats from safely locking in place. The affected vehicles are 2004 to 2007 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans.

Corrosion on the fold-down third-row seats keeps the seats from safely locking in place. A Ford spokesperson told The New York Times that the company was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

An additional 33,500 vehicles are being recalled outside of the United States, almost all from Canada, according to the Times report.

The U.S. recall will affect vehicles sold or registered in the 20 "salt-belt" states and the District of Colombia, the article said.

The regional recall will affect cars sold or registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Critics of regional recalls say that they are not effective because it is easy for people to move away from the region where they purchased their car.

Subaru of America issued a recall on more than 47,000 cars and SUVs with remote starters because there is risk of the cars' engines unintentionally starting.

The recall will affect Legacy and Outback vehicles from model years 2010 to 2013, as well as Imprezas from 2012 and 2013 and the 2013 XV Crosstrek.

The problem, Subaru, said is with the key fob, which can malfunction and start the engine if it is dropped, the Associated Press reported. An unintentionally running engine could waste gas or, of the car is parked in a closed garage, potentially build up dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, the report stated.

Subaru will replace the faulty key fobs free of charge. The cars subject to recall all have automatic or continuously variable transmissions, the report stated.
