A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific island of Vanuatu this week, but wasn't strong enough to cause any damage according to the Associated Press.
The quake struck on Thursday, Feb. 28, but The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center didn't feel the need to issue a tsunami warning.
Godwin Ligo of the Trading Post newspaper stated he felt the quake in his office building at the capital Port Vila. He wasn't sure if any significant problems had occurred due to the earthquake though.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported shortly after the quake that the epicenter was 64 miles west of the capital at a "shallow" depth of 9 miles according to the report.
Vanuatu is on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that reaches around the Pacific Rim.
The ring contains the friction points of many of the tectonic plates that make up the surface of the Earth according to local geologists. It expands from South America, where the Nazca plate officially dips underneath the South American plate, pushing up the Andes mountains.
The "fire" portion of the name comes from the fact that the ring itself contains three-fourths the active volcanoes in the entire world according to the U.S. Geological Study. There report claims that the quake was no major surprised to those who live nearby.
Vanuatu has a population of approximately 224,000 people. No casualties have been reported as of yet.
When a magnitude 8.0 quake hit there earlier this month however, six people were killed by the earthquake and a small tsunami that formed near the islands. No major damage was done to the islands according to BBC News.
